Section 5 - Lauder to Longformacus
The section from Lauder to
Longformacus is 14 miles / 22.5 km
in length.
This is on hill and moorland paths with some farm tracks and minor
roads near to Longformacus.
The Way leaves Lauder through the grounds of Thirlestane Castle,
crosses the Leader Water then climbs through woods towards the A697 Carfraemill to
Coldstream road.
Having crossed the road and passed by the side of Wanton Walls farm
the Way now enters the Lammermuir Hills.
Before entering open moorland, the path passes through the southern
corner of Edgarhope wood, then following its eastern edge before
heading north east. The Way crosses the
Snawdon Burn then past Heugh Hill it picks up the general line of the
Blythe Water.
The route crosses the Blythe Water at a
pedestrian bridge then climbs towards Scoured Rig before reaching
Braidshawrig where the Wester and Easter Burns
meet to form the Blythe Water.
Braidshawrig has been re-developed by Burncastle Estates from its
earlier vacant hill farm. The Way now turns north east as it makes
its climb towards Twin Law and the Twinlaw Cairns
This is a climb of around 350 metres over a 6 Km walk in open
Lammermuir countryside. As this is grouse shooting countryside you are
asked to stick to the clearly defined path and to keep any dog on the
leash.
From Twinlaw Cairns there are extensive and open views to the south
looking over the Tweed basin to the Cheviots. Just on the north side
of the Tweed sitting behind Fans Hill is
Smailholm Tower, a tower and
location that had a significant influence on Walter Scott in his early
years.
To the east the views
are to the Berwickshire planes and ultimately the North Sea.
The descent is by way of well defined paths or moorland tracks,
first arriving at a smallholding at Scarlaw on the side of Watch Water.
Follow the north and east shore line of the resorvoir.
The end of this section is now only 2 mile (3Km) along a minor road
that picks up the line of the Watch Water and then the Dye Water.
Longformacus is a small community
situated on the Dye Water next to a
charming bridge that crosses the water.
